Delta State: police detain officers for shooting vigilante leader
The Delta State Police Command has announced the detention of officers involved in the shooting of a vigilante leader in Idjerhe kingdom, Ethiope West Local Government Area. DSP Bright Edafe, the state Police Public Relations Officer, condemned the incident in a statement issued on Saturday in Asaba, the state capital.
Edafe stated, "The command is aware of reports circulating in certain media outlets regarding the alleged shooting by policemen at Idjerhe kingdom in Ethiope West LGA."
He added, "Commissioner of Police, Delta State, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, has instructed the Deputy Commissioner of Police, State Criminal Investigation Department, to launch a comprehensive investigation into the matter. The involved officers have been identified, and detained, and an internal disciplinary process has commenced."
Emphasizing the command's commitment to upholding citizens' rights and adhering to Force Order 237, Edafe reiterated CP Olufemi's stance against such misconduct. He assured the public that the officers would face appropriate consequences under the Police Act and regulations, underlining that such behavior would not be tolerated.
The CP urged all officers to uphold professional standards and respect citizens' rights as enshrined in the 1999 constitution of Nigeria, emphasizing that the disciplinary measures taken would deter future infractions.
Addressing the affected community and the injured vigilantes' families, CP Olufemi urged calmness and pledged justice.
In a separate incident, the state police command apprehended an alleged armed robber during a routine stop-and-search operation. CP Olufemi reported the recovery of a locally made gun and two live cartridges from the suspect.
