A Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Gbolahan Olugbemi, aged 50, has reportedly died by suicide in Ogbomosho, Oyo State.
"DCP Olugbemi, who was serving at the Force Criminal Intelligence and Investigations Department (FCIID), Alagbon, Lagos, reportedly died in his country home at Ògbómọ̀ṣọ́, Oyo State, where he had gone for the Easter break," as per reports.
It is said that Olugbemi passed away in circumstances suspected to be suicide by hanging. His body was discovered alone in his mansion. Police authorities have not yet disclosed their findings.
A senior police officer stated that the Force was investigating to uncover the mystery behind his action as he did not leave a suicide note. "Until his mysterious death, the DCP served at the FCID Annex Alagbon close, Ikoyi Lagos," the officer added.
The police, through the FCID spokesperson, ASP Aminat Mayegun, stated that they would investigate his death, emphasizing that the former Personal Assistant to late DIG Israel Ajao and late CP Young Arebame could not have committed suicide.
They mentioned that they would probe who first saw his body, where he was coming from, who was with him when he entered his room, and who had his two handsets at the time of death. The police noted that DCP Olugbemi had enjoyed significant postings throughout his career and was nearing retirement, making his death unexpected.
However, insider sources indicated that the 50-year-old Police officer's body was found alone in his mansion. Olugbemi, a United Nations medalist in Law Enforcement and Administration, had served as the ADC to the late Oyo State Governor, Alao Akala.
He had also been a DPO at Ilupeju, an Area Commander at Ajah in Lagos, and had previously served as Personal Assistant (PA) to two Lagos State Commissioners of Police, the late CP Young Arebamen and the late DIG Israel Ajao.
Olugbemi, who had received training in Terrorism and Counter-Terrorism Operations, had received numerous awards both in Nigeria and abroad, and had been lauded in the media for several commendable actions throughout his career. He was a graduate of the University of Lagos and Olabisi Onabanjo University, respectively.
