Two 10-year-old students were arrested in connection with a gun sale at their elementary school in Florida, confirmed county officials.

According to a statement from the Hendry County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy's son "agreed to exchange a handgun (later identified as belonging to his deceased father) for a sum of $300" back in February.

Country Oaks Elementary School was placed on lockdown Wednesday morning following a call to the sheriff's office regarding "a suspicious incident" on campus. Upon investigation, authorities found ammunition in the backpack of the boy who purchased the gun.

Subsequently, the gun was located in his backyard under a shed, concealed alongside a 74-gram bag of marijuana, as reported by investigators.

The purchasing boy faces charges including the purchase of a firearm by a minor, unlawful possession of a firearm by a minor, possession of a firearm on school property, and possession of marijuana over 20 grams.

The deputy's son who sold the gun is charged with selling a firearm to a minor, unlawful possession of a firearm by a minor, possession of a firearm on school property, and grand theft of a firearm.

The mother of the boy involved in the gun sale, also a Hendry County deputy, has been put on administrative leave pending an administrative inquiry, as stated by the sheriff's office.

Both students have been under the custody of the Department of Juvenile Justice since their arrest.
