Country music icon Dolly Parton is grieving the loss of her husband, Carl Dean, who passed away on Monday in Nashville, Tennessee, at the age of 82. The couple had been married for nearly six decades.

Dean’s passing was announced moments ago on Parton’s Instagram. “Carl Dean, husband of Dolly Parton, passed away March 3rd in Nashville at the age of 82. He will be laid to rest in a private ceremony with immediate family attending. He is survived by his siblings Sandra and Donnie,” the statement read. Parton shared a heartfelt message of her own, writing, “Carl and I spent many wonderful years together. Words can’t do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years. Thank you for your prayers and sympathy. The family asks for privacy during this difficult time.”

His cause of death has not been disclosed. Born in Nashville in 1942 to Virginia “Ginny” Bates Dean and Edgar “Ed” Henry Dean, little is publicly known about Dean’s early life before meeting Parton.

The couple’s love story began when Parton was 18 years old at a Wishy Washy Laundromat. “I was surprised and delighted that while he talked to me, he looked at my face (a rare thing for me),” Parton once shared. “He seemed to be genuinely interested in finding out who I was and what I was about.”

They married two years later, on May 30, 1966, in a private ceremony in Ringgold, Georgia. Despite Parton’s immense fame, she kept their relationship private, rarely speaking about their marriage publicly. However, she occasionally shared glimpses of their life together.

Parton recalled their first meeting in a 1976 New York Times interview. “I’d come to Nashville with dirty clothes. I was in such a hurry to get here. And after I’d put my clothes in the machine, I started walkin’ down the street, just lookin’ at my new home, and this guy hollered at me, and I waved. Bein’ from the country, I spoke to everybody. And he came over and, well, it was Carl, my husband.”

Though initially cautious about dating a stranger, Parton eventually invited Dean to visit while she babysat her nephew. “Dean came over every day that week, and the first time they went out together, he took her to meet his parents,” she shared.

Over the years, Dean largely stayed out of the spotlight, leading some to question whether he was real. “A lot of people say there’s no Carl Dean, that he’s just somebody I made up to keep other people off me,” Parton joked to the Associated Press in 1984. She even considered posing with him on a magazine cover “so that people could at least know that I’m not married to a wart or something.”

Despite his reclusive nature, Dean once gave a rare interview to Entertainment Tonight in 2016, recalling his first impression of Parton: “My first thought was ‘I’m gonna marry that girl.’ My second thought was, ‘Lord, she’s good lookin’.’ And that was the day my life began. I wouldn’t trade the last 50 years for nothing on this earth.”

Dean also inspired one of Parton’s most famous songs, Jolene. Parton revealed that the song stemmed from a playful moment in their marriage. “She got this terrible crush on my husband,” she told NPR in 2008, referring to a bank teller who flirted with Dean. “And he just loved going to the bank because she paid him so much attention. It was kinda like a running joke between us—when I was saying, ‘Hell, you’re spending a lot of time at the bank. I don’t believe we’ve got that kind of money.’”

Although Jolene never won a Grammy, it received two nominations and was later inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Parton and Dean never had children, a choice the singer has reflected on over the years. “I would have been a great mother, I think. I would probably have given up everything else. Because I would’ve felt guilty about that, if I’d have left them [to work, to tour]. Everything would have changed. I probably wouldn’t have been a star,” she told The Guardian.

As Parton mourns the loss of her lifelong partner, she asks for privacy during this difficult time.
