A vacationing couple from Georgia found themselves in legal trouble after excessive drinking on Daytona Beach left them incapable of supervising their two children, aged 5 and 7, according to Florida investigators.
The incident occurred on Saturday, March 16, and was reported by a 911 caller who observed the adults passed out due to intoxication, prompting concerns about the safety of the children.
Upon arrival, Volusia County deputies discovered an unconscious man and woman surrounded by empty alcohol containers and children's toys. Despite attempts to wake the man, including verbal prompts and physical nudges, he remained unresponsive until deputies resorted to shouting, which finally roused the couple from their stupor.
When questioned about the whereabouts of their children, the couple initially indicated they were somewhere near the ocean but failed to provide specific details or assist in locating them further. Subsequently, deputies initiated a search and eventually found the children, a boy and a girl, unsupervised and swimming at the Nautilus Inn pool.
The 27-year-old couple, who reside northeast of Atlanta, was arrested on charges of child neglect. The man, who is not the biological father of the children, faced additional charges for possessing alcohol on a Volusia County beach and attempting to flee from authorities. He attempted to escape during questioning but fell and lost consciousness upon hitting the ground, necessitating medical attention.
Following the arrest, the children were taken to a family resource center until a relative arrived from Georgia to take them back home.
