A tragic incident marred Italy’s 80th Liberation Day celebrations in the central town of Lanciano on Friday when a car driven by an 80-year-old man plowed into a crowd, killing one person and injuring two others. According to emergency responders, the driver reportedly suffered a sudden illness before losing control of the vehicle.
The victim, an 81-year-old man, died on the scene from his injuries. Two women sustained injuries in the impact and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. An official investigation has been launched to determine the full circumstances surrounding the crash.

The incident occurred at the conclusion of the town’s Liberation Day parade, organized by ANPI, the Italian partisan association responsible for preserving the history of the Resistance movement against Fascist forces during World War II.

Liberation Day, or Festa della Liberazione, is observed annually on April 25 as a national holiday, commemorating the end of Nazi occupation and Fascist rule in Italy. The day is typically marked by public parades, demonstrations, and remembrance events throughout the country.
This year’s Liberation Day also coincides with a five-day period of national mourning following the death of Pope Francis. Italian government officials had urged citizens to observe the celebrations with respect and moderation.
