Ex-Meta engineer shot dead his college-sweetheart wife in the bathtub before killing his twin sons, 4, and turning the gun on himself in horrific murder-suicide at their $2.1M Bay Area home
The family discovered deceased inside a Bay Area home earlier this week were a husband, wife, and their twin 4-year-old boys.
Identified by friends on Tuesday, the couple were Anand Sujith Henry, 37, and Alice Benziger, 38, who bought the $2.1 million home in ritzy San Mateo in 2020, according to records.
Their twin sons, Noah and Neithan, both aged four, were found inside one of its five bedrooms on Monday morning, resting on a couch.
Confirmed by the San Mateo Police Department on Tuesday, the couple, who respectively worked as a data scientist and an engineer, were discovered with gunshot wounds next to a 9mm pistol and a loaded magazine in the bathroom.
Initially thought to be gas poisonings, the case is now being treated as a murder-suicide, as clarified by authorities after a welfare check at 9:13 am on Monday revealed the tragic scene.
"We are confident the person responsible was located within the home," stated the police, continuing to investigate the incident surrounding the family, who hailed from India, as confirmed by friends and family.
Records indicate that the husband, a former Software Engineering Manager at both Meta and Google, filed for divorce in December 2016, years before Benziger, a data science manager at Zillow, gave birth.
Despite the divorce filing, it appears it never went through. After leaving his position at Meta in June, Henry founded his own AI company, Logits, aimed at providing enterprises with the means to 'privately train and serve Generative AI models' tailored to their specific business needs.
Before this venture, he had worked at Meta for a year and a half, following an almost eight-year tenure at Google's Sunnyvale office.
Having lived in New York City at one point, Henry was a member of Toastmasters, a non-profit focused on overcoming the fear of public speaking.
The family had lived in at least four apartments across San Francisco before relocating to the home where the tragedy occurred, coinciding with the birth of their children. Local reports suggest authorities had been called to the home several times since then, though the nature of these calls remains undisclosed.
At present, police in the affluent Bay Area suburb are without a clear motive but maintain the killings were perpetrated by someone residing at the residence.
The grisly scene was discovered on Monday morning after officers received a call expressing concern for the family's well-being and whereabouts. Receiving no response after knocking on the door, officers entered through an unlocked window.
The investigation continues as detectives gather evidence, interview witnesses and family members, and seek to establish a possible motive. The San Mateo County Coroner's office is presently working to notify the families of the deceased.
Unnamed sources told KTVU that the father fatally shot his wife in a bathtub before taking his own life, countering earlier claims of death due to a gas leak from the air conditioning system, which was reported by a relative to The New Indian Express.
The couple immigrated to the US in 2018. Henry's father, Dr. G. Henry, was the former principal of Fatima Mata National College in Kerala, India.
Benziger's mother had been staying with the family until February 11, the day before the tragedy, as per a news source from the region. Relatives from India are reportedly traveling to the US following the incident.
Neighbors expressed shock, emphasizing the rarity of such occurrences in their community.
Matthew Sheldon told KTVU, "There's hardly any deaths in this area ever," while Thomas Lease remarked, "It seems like an isolated incident, but I’m really sorry things happened. It happens everywhere. I’m not going to walk in fear now."
Both Henry and Benziger were alumni of TKM Engineering College and Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.
Benziger pursued a Master's in data science at the University of San Francisco, subsequently holding positions at Dictionary.com, Idibon, and Change.org before assuming her senior role at Zillow six years ago.
The investigation by San Mateo police remains ongoing as of Wednesday.
