A father and son from Rhode Island are dead following a six-hour armed standoff with Connecticut police after robbing a local bank, authorities confirmed.

Shaun Fallon, 56, and his 27-year-old son, Zachary Fallon, allegedly held up the Chelsea Groton Bank in Groton around 10:30 a.m. last Thursday. Wearing medical masks to disguise their identities, the pair threatened a bank teller before fleeing the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Authorities tracked the suspects to a nearby Super 8 Motel later that day. Upon locating the getaway vehicle in the motel parking lot, police initiated a standoff that lasted approximately six hours.

During the standoff, the Fallons told officers they were armed with firearms and explosives and refused to surrender. According to police, two gunshots were eventually heard from within the suspects’ room. Drone surveillance confirmed both men appeared incapacitated from apparent gunshot wounds.

A bomb squad was called to the scene, and the motel was evacuated as a precaution. After clearing the room, authorities found no explosives, though they did not disclose what firearms or other weapons may have been present.

Shaun and Zachary Fallon, both of Charleston, Rhode Island, were transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Zachary was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Shaun remained hospitalized for several days before succumbing to his injuries on Monday. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the official cause of death for both men.

“This was an extremely dangerous and volatile situation, and I want to commend the bravery and professionalism of all the law enforcement personnel involved in bringing it to a close,” said Groton Police Chief L.J. Fusaro.
