A FedEx cargo jet was forced to make an emergency landing after one of its engines caught fire just moments after taking off from Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey.

The aircraft had been in the air for approximately nine minutes when it was forced to return, with witnesses on the ground capturing footage of flames spewing from the engine. Loud explosion-like sounds were reportedly heard as the plane ascended.

"Engine failure/fire FedEx 3609 at Newark on takeoff, returned to land," one post on X noted.

Airport authorities have attributed the incident to a bird strike, which they claim damaged the engine. Air traffic was briefly halted as a precaution, but operations have since resumed.

No injuries were reported in the incident, which adds to a growing list of aviation emergencies in recent months.
