Spanish teacher Heydi Monroy, 37, has been accused of raping a 14-year-old student

Heydi Monroy, a 37-year-old Spanish teacher from North Carolina, has been arrested and charged with statutory rape of a 14-year-old student. The arrest took place on Tuesday following an investigation initiated by officials at Wellcome Middle School in Greenville.

The investigation was reportedly triggered by a report from a school employee. Court documents referenced by WITN indicate that the alleged crimes occurred on April 5.

Monroy, originally from Colombia, had been working at the school since August 2022

The Public Information Officer for Pitt County Schools confirmed that Monroy, originally from Colombia, is no longer employed at the middle school. Monroy had been part of the school’s staff since August 2022.

As of Wednesday, Monroy is being held without bond.

This incident is part of a concerning trend, as numerous female teachers across the country have been arrested this year for sex crimes involving students. This phenomenon, colloquially referred to as ‘cougars in the classroom’, appears to be on the rise.
