Terrified passengers onboard a Condor flight from Corfu to Düsseldorf watched in horror as flames erupted from one of the aircraft’s engines shortly after takeoff, prompting pilots to make an emergency landing in Italy.
The Boeing jet had climbed to approximately 36,000 feet on Saturday evening when the engine suddenly emitted loud booms and began sputtering flames, according to reports. Passenger video captured the moment the blaze shot from the engine as the aircraft flew over the Ionian Sea.

Pilots immediately diverted the flight and landed safely in Brindisi, Italy, approximately 40 minutes after departure from the Greek resort island. The airline later confirmed the crew responded to an engine parameter alert caused by a disruption in turbine airflow.
“It was an incredibly horrible experience. I already sent goodbye texts because I thought, ‘It’s over now,’” one passenger said. Another described a sudden loss of power and a brief pause in the aircraft’s climb before the flames appeared.

Ground footage showed flashes of fire and loud booms coming from the engine as the plane descended toward Brindisi. Despite the dramatic scenes, a Condor spokesperson said the situation did not pose a danger to passengers or crew and emphasized that the engine itself had not caught fire.
A replacement aircraft was dispatched to transport passengers to Düsseldorf the following day. Due to limited hotel availability in Brindisi, Condor arranged vouchers and blankets at the airport and opened select shops to provide food and supplies. Passengers who secured their own accommodation were advised to submit expenses for reimbursement.
“The safety of our passengers and employees is always our top priority,” the airline said in a statement, adding that the aircraft is now undergoing a full technical inspection.
