A surprising scene unfolded in Santa Barbara when more than 300 sheep escaped their enclosure and took over a local street, prompting the California Highway Patrol (CHP) to spring into action and herd the flock back to safety.

The unexpected incident occurred near Mountain Drive, where the runaway sheep caused a temporary traffic jam as they roamed freely along the road. Officers from the Santa Barbara division of CHP quickly responded to assist the animals’ owner in wrangling the large group and preventing any accidents.

According to officials, the sheep managed to break free from their pen, making their way onto the road in what CHP humorously described as a case of “300+ sheep on the lamb.” The department confirmed that the sheep were safely returned to their enclosure, and normal traffic resumed shortly after.

“Turns out, the grass wasn’t greener on the other side — but that didn’t stop them from trying,” CHP stated. “We’re happy to report the flock is back where they belong, and everyone is baaahck to their normal routine.”

The incident provided a dose of comic relief for locals, with photos showing the flock moving as one through the quiet residential area. CHP used the opportunity to remind drivers to stay alert for unusual road hazards, particularly in rural and semi-rural regions where livestock may occasionally wander into traffic.

The Santa Barbara sheep incident adds to a growing list of animal escapades in 2025. Earlier in June, a zebra named Ed captivated residents in Rutherford County, Tennessee, after escaping and running loose for days. The animal was eventually located by aviation crews and safely returned to its owner after becoming a viral sensation.

While both events ended safely, authorities continue to urge the public to drive cautiously and report any unusual animal sightings on the road.
