The bodies of a wealthy couple and their 9-year-old daughter were discovered in their South Carolina mansion on Friday, with authorities releasing few details regarding the circumstances of their deaths.
Law enforcement in Greer, a town northeast of Greenville in western South Carolina, responded to a call from a concerned neighbor and found the bodies of Richard Samarel, 54; Lina Maria Samarel, 45; and their daughter, Samantha Samarel. The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office confirmed their identities. Authorities have not disclosed whether the deaths were the result of foul play or an accident but stated that there is no apparent threat to the public.

Officials noted that other residents of the home were at school when the incident occurred. Social media posts by Lina Maria suggest that the couple had additional children, possibly another daughter and a young son. Law enforcement stated that more details would be released once investigations by both the Coroner’s Office and the sheriff’s department progress further.

According to their social media profiles, Richard and Lina Maria Samarel had been married since 2009. Richard previously worked as an equities manager at Bloomberg LP before departing the company in 2007. Lina Maria, originally from Colombia, was employed by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The family resided in a six-bedroom home valued at nearly $800,000, based on property listings.
