A 28-year-old woman has been charged with assault after allegedly striking a police officer with her car and driving into a crowded street fair in Laurel, Maryland, in a frantic attempt to get to work. The incident, which was caught on bodycam video, unfolded Saturday morning and left one officer with minor injuries.
The suspect, Kai DeBerry-Bostick, a former Bowie State University cheerleader and Zeta Delta sorority member, reportedly became frustrated when road closures prevented her from passing through the area. Police say DeBerry-Bostick ignored multiple warnings, tore down yellow police tape, and drove her vehicle onto Main Street, which was lined with booths and filled with pedestrians attending the fair.

Bodycam footage shows DeBerry-Bostick arguing with a police officer, insisting, “I need to get out, I gotta go,” while refusing the officer’s offer to call her a cab. When the officer instructed her not to interfere with the secured area, she replied, “I might have to,” before ripping down the police barricade.

She then proceeded to drive her car into the fair area, coming within feet of a man pushing a stroller, as festival-goers screamed and scattered. “Stop! Stop your car!” the officer yelled as she continued down the closed-off road.
The confrontation ended when police forcibly removed her from the vehicle and placed her in handcuffs on the pavement. Authorities confirmed she was charged with assault and is currently being held in a local detention facility. No civilians were harmed during the incident, but the officer sustained minor injuries after being hit by the vehicle.

DeBerry-Bostick, who graduated in 2021 as an honor student and was previously recognized by her sorority for securing a job with a Maryland tax services company, now faces serious legal repercussions.
The chaotic morning escalated further when an unrelated propane explosion at a festival booth injured a vendor, prompting the cancellation of a planned parade and the closure of part of Main Street, according to police.
