At least four villagers have been confirmed dead and seven others remain missing following a violent attack by suspected herdsmen in Ikpakpara village, Agu-Amed, Eha-Amufu, located in the Isi-Uzo Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The attack, which occurred on Sunday evening, is the latest in a series of deadly raids that have plagued the Eha-Amufu region in recent years. Community leader Ogbuzuru Ebe confirmed the incident by phone on Monday, stating that four bodies were recovered from farmlands while search efforts continue for the missing residents.

“We just recovered four bodies of people killed on their farms,” Ebe said. “We are looking for seven people who are still missing after the attack.”

The assault has deepened fear and tension in the community, which has repeatedly faced brutal invasions allegedly carried out by armed herdsmen. Residents report not only mass killings but also incidents of sexual violence against women, forced displacement, and destruction of farmland.

Frustration continues to mount among locals, who accuse both the state and local governments of failing to intervene effectively or provide adequate security. Community leaders expressed anger over what they described as the government’s inaction and indifference, particularly criticizing the local government chairman for what they see as a lack of tangible support.

The timing of the attack is particularly alarming, coming less than 24 hours after Enugu State Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, visited the Eha-Amufu area as part of a stated effort to increase rural surveillance and build public confidence. He was accompanied by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) Gregory Itobore, Udenu Area Commander ACP Bernard Amaga Ukwa, and other senior officers.

Despite the high-level police visit, Sunday's assault has reignited concern over the worsening security crisis in Enugu State, especially the unresolved and escalating tensions between farming communities and suspected herders.

Calls and messages seeking comment from the Enugu State Police Command's spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, were not returned at the time of this report.

Local residents and community stakeholders continue to call on the government and security agencies to provide lasting solutions to the recurring violence, protect lives and properties, and bring the perpetrators to justice.
