Four Workers Killed in Egypt Boat Drowning
Four construction workers tragically lost their lives on Sunday when their boat capsized in a canal near the Giza area of Egypt, as reported by state media.
According to reports, five others were rescued, but the whereabouts of the remaining four passengers remain unknown.
The small boat, carrying 13 workers, sank near the village of Nekla, approximately 30 kilometers from Cairo.
State-owned newspaper Al-Ahram stated that rescuers recovered the bodies of four victims and saved five others, with ongoing efforts to locate the missing passengers.
The health ministry informed that rescued passengers had been transported to the hospital, suffering from "drowning-induced asphyxia."
Western media correspondents on-site reported that local fishermen retrieved a body from the water.
One volunteer, speaking to AFP, mentioned arriving at the scene more than an hour after the tragic accident and rescuing four people.
These volunteers, supported by donations from nearby villages, are dedicated to responding to emergencies in the canal.
Drowning incidents are unfortunately not uncommon in agricultural areas along Egypt's canals, where small, overloaded boats transport farmers and workers. Additionally, there are regular reports of children and students falling into the water and struggling to swim to safety, prompting local communities to organize search-and-rescue operations.
