French Rapper Werenoi Dies at 31 Just Hours Before Scheduled Performance

French rapper Werenoi, born Jeremy Bana Owana, has died at the age of 31, just hours before he was set to perform at a concert in Lyon. His death was confirmed by his producer Babs, who paid tribute to the artist on social media, writing, âRest in peace my brother I love you!!!â
Werenoi reportedly suffered a cardio-respiratory arrest and was admitted to intensive care before passing away in the early hours of Saturday morning. His sudden death has shocked fans and the French music community, with tributes pouring in from loved ones and prominent industry figures.
Fred Musa, a well-known radio host, extended his condolences to Werenoiâs family and shared the producerâs message in remembrance. The rapper, who had recently emerged as a leading figure in French rap, was recognized for his exceptional talent and impact on the genre.
In 2024, Werenoi won Album of the Year at Les Flammes, one of France's most prestigious music awards. Though he did not attend the ceremony in person, he sent a video message to thank fans, appearing with his arm in a cast and revealing he had suffered a âserious injury.â He assured fans it was only a temporary setback and that he would see them soon.

With over 6.7 million monthly listeners on Spotify, Werenoi had become one of the most streamed artists in France. His hit songs include Scarface, Solitaire, Laboratoire, Chemin dâor, and Ciao featuring Ninho. In 2023, he released CarrĂ©, the best-selling record in France that year. His follow-up album, Pyramide, continued his streak of success into 2024.
Werenoi, of Cameroonian descent, was beloved not only for his music but also for his connection with fans and his authenticity. His last Instagram post, shared on May 1, has since been flooded with messages from grieving followers.
One fan wrote, âRest in peace the goat, one of the best gone too soon. Courage to the family.â Another commented, âIt reminds us that all this money, this life, this luxuryâwhen weâre no longer here, it means nothing. Letâs make the most of life. May God protect you all.â
Werenoi was scheduled to perform at Azar Club in Lyon on Saturday, May 17. The event was described as an exclusive showcase to launch his new album, promising a âunique eveningâ for fans to witness the star live.
His passing has left a void in the French rap scene, with many remembering him as a rising icon who was only just beginning to reach his full potential.
