A 54-year-old man died just 48 hours before his wedding after a tragic electric scooter crash in Top Valley, Nottingham. Scott Catton, a father-of-one, was riding his e-scooter on Thursday, June 6, when he collided with a car door that was suddenly opened in his path.

Catton was immediately rushed to Queen’s Medical Centre, suffering from multiple broken ribs, a fractured collarbone, and a severe brain bleed. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries two days later on Saturday, June 8.

He was due to marry his fiancée, Debi, on Monday, June 10, at the Arnold Registry Office, with plans to fly to Majorca for their honeymoon the following day. The couple’s wedding and honeymoon plans have now been replaced by devastating grief and the urgent need to organize funeral arrangements.

Scott’s brother-in-law, Philip Bates, 56, described the heartbreaking circumstances. “He was on his way home and on an electric scooter, someone opened a car door and he just hit it,” Bates explained. “He broke ribs, his collarbone and had a severe brain bleed. We went straight to the hospital and spent most of the weekend there.”

“He was the life and soul of the party, everyone loved him,” Bates added. “He was a cheeky chap, massively into his sports. He played football for local and veteran teams, loved his cricket and boxing, and was a huge Nottingham Forest fan. He recently went to watch England at Wembley and saw the Eubank vs. Benn fight.”

The family is now raising funds to help with funeral costs and to support Scott’s 13-year-old son. Bates has set up a GoFundMe campaign with the aim of reaching £7,500. Over £5,700 has already been raised. The remainder will be placed in a trust for Scott’s son.

In a public statement, the family said: “Today (Saturday the 7th of June) we had to say goodbye to a much loved friend, partner, father, uncle and brother. Scott had a traffic accident from which he didn’t recover. We are trying to raise funds to give him the send-off he deserves. Any remaining funds will be put into trust for his 13-year-old son. We are all in deep shock. Please find it in your hearts to help.”

The family expressed their deep appreciation for the outpouring of support. “We are truly humbled and grateful for all your generosity. It just shows how loved Scott was. Massive thanks to everyone who has donated and special thanks to the Park Tavern and the Oxford public house for organising fundraising events.”

Nottinghamshire Police confirmed that officers are actively investigating the incident but are not releasing further information at this time.
