The Met Gala is a fundraiser for the Costume Institute, the only self-funded department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Last year, the event raised over $26 million to support the museum.

The Met Gala wasn't always the high-profile event it is today. It began in 1948 as a modest Manhattan society midnight supper, held at venues like the Waldorf Astoria and the Rainbow Room. It took decades to evolve into the global spectacle and celebrity-filled night it has become.

Though now synonymous with “the first Monday in May,” the Met Gala didn’t officially adopt that date until 2005, coinciding with the Costume Institute’s Chanel-themed exhibition.
