Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones suffered another courtroom defeat as a Texas district judge ruled that his Infowars platform could be put up for sale once more. The order, issued Wednesday, Aug. 13, by Judge Maya Guerra Gamble, places Infowars’ parent company, Free Speech Systems, under the control of a court-appointed receiver tasked with liquidating assets to satisfy $1.3 billion in legal judgments.
The ruling stems from Jones’ 2022 defamation case, in which courts determined he spread false claims that the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooting—where six adults and 20 children were killed—was a fabricated government operation to seize firearms.
The decision revives The Onion’s bid to purchase Infowars and its assets after the satirical outlet initially won a court-ordered auction in December 2024. That sale was blocked by a U.S. bankruptcy judge who said the process had not yielded the highest possible bids. Judge Gamble’s latest order reopens the door for a renewed auction process.
Following the announcement, The Onion CEO Ben Collins posted on Bluesky, “We’re working on it. That’s all I can say for now.”
