Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf officially reappointed former Central Bank Governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano on Thursday.

This announcement was made by Kwankwason Tuwita, the Senior Special Assistant on Digital Media to the governor, via a post on X. Tuwita also shared a video showing the governor signing a newly passed bill that dissolves four additional emirates created alongside the Kano Emirate.

The additional emirates—Rano, Karaye, Gaya, and Bichi—were established under a controversial law by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje in 2019. Governor Yusuf stated, "I have approved the reappointment of Khalipha Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano."

The governor issued a 48-hour notice for the deposed emirs of the additional emirates to vacate their royal palaces. The Kano State Assembly recently passed "The Kano State Emirates Councils (Repeal) Bill, 2024," which dissolves the additional emirates and restores the Kano Emirate under Sanusi's leadership.

The 2019 amendment that created the four new emirates and appointed first-class emirs for them led to Sanusi's deposition. Governor Yusuf’s recent election victory has reignited calls for Sanusi’s reinstatement, a promise Yusuf made during his campaign to restore the old Kano Emirate system.
