Katsina State Begins Rescue of 60 Wedding Guests Abducted by Gunmen
The Katsina State Government has announced the initiation of rescue operations in response to the abduction of 60 wedding guests by gunmen in Damari town. The incident, which occurred at about 9 pm on Thursday in the Sabuwa Local Government Area, involved a terrorist gang kidnapping guests escorting a bride home.
The state's Internal Security Commissioner, Muazu Nasiru, addressed the situation through his spokesperson, Tukur Ali, confirming the government's awareness of the incident. He assured that rescue operations were underway to ensure the safe release of the victims.
In a text message, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Abubakar Aliyu, disclosed that 35 women were abducted by suspected armed bandits. He reported that a group of women, returning from a wedding ceremony between Unguwar Mujiya village and Gamji village, was ambushed by armed bandits between Sabuwa and Dandume LGAs.
The police command has mobilized intelligence and operational assets to promptly rescue the kidnapped victims. The text assured that further developments would be communicated as the situation unfolds.
Earlier reports indicated that three local security volunteers lost their lives in a hastily coordinated effort to rescue the victims during the incident. The victims, mainly friends of the bride, were in an open van called a canter vehicle when the attack occurred. Several others managed to escape by jumping off the moving canter van after the terrorists took control.
Sabuwa, where the abduction took place, is identified as one of the local government areas heavily plagued by banditry in the state, primarily an agrarian area.
Alhaji Basiru Musa, the Chairman of Dandume Local Government Council, confirmed the incident, explaining that the criminals intercepted the women on their way from Sabuwa Local Government Area around 9 pm.
While unconfirmed reports suggest that a few kidnapped women escaped, the chairman pledged to verify and provide updates as the situation unfolds.
In a related incident during the same timeframe, gunmen from the Siddi forest reportedly infiltrated Tashar Nadaya near the Gazari district border in Sabuwa LGA. The criminals killed a commercial motorcycle rider and fled with his bike, further intensifying security concerns in the region.
