Kenneth Mitchell, the accomplished Canadian actor recognized for his roles in Jericho, Captain Marvel, and Star Trek: Discovery, has passed away at the age of 49 due to complications related to ALS.
The news of his passing was shared by his family members via social media. "With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Kenneth Alexander Mitchell, cherished father, husband, brother, uncle, son, and dear friend," their statement read.
"Over five and a half years, Ken confronted a series of daunting challenges from ALS. Yet, in true Ken fashion, he faced each one with grace and determination, embracing life to its fullest in every moment. He lived by the belief that each day is a gift and that we are never alone."
In 2020, Mitchell disclosed his diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. ALS is a progressive motor neuron disease characterized by the degeneration of nerve cells in the spinal cord and brain.
Mitchell portrayed Joseph Danvers, the father of Brie Larson’s Carol, in the 2019 Marvel film Captain Marvel. Additionally, he played various roles in the sci-fi series Star Trek: Discovery, notably the Klingon characters Kol, Kol-Sha, and Tenavik. By the third season, Mitchell's portrayal of Aurellio saw him utilizing a wheelchair due to his condition, paralleling his character's use of a hoverchair in the series.
He also depicted Eric Green in CBS’s post-apocalyptic series Jericho.
StarTrek.com paid tribute to Mitchell, acknowledging his contributions to Klingon culture on Discovery. "As Kol, Mitchell aimed to offer fans a fresh perspective on Klingon culture through his portrayal on Discovery. The entire Star Trek community extends their condolences to Mitchell’s family, friends, loved ones, and fans worldwide."
Reflecting on his ALS diagnosis, Mitchell shared with People magazine: “The moment that they told us it was [ALS], it was like I was in my own movie. That’s what it felt like, like I was watching that scene where someone is being told that they have a terminal illness. It was just a complete disbelief, a shock.”
Mitchell is survived by his parents, his wife Susan, their children Lilah and Kallum, as well as by his in-laws, nieces, and nephews.
