Tragedy struck in two southern Indian states as separate incidents claimed the lives of a 24-year-old woman in Kerala and a 77-year-old German tourist in Tamil Nadu.
In Kerala’s Wayanad district, a young woman lost her life and three others were injured after a makeshift tent collapsed at a popular resort. The incident took place around 1 a.m. on Wednesday at 900 Kandi Ecopark, a tourist spot located in Meppadi. The deceased has been identified as Nishma, a resident of Akampadam near Nilambur in Malappuram district.

According to police reports, the temporary tent structure, constructed using wooden poles and dry grass thatching, suddenly gave way, collapsing on four tourists inside. The structure was part of a provisional installation within the resort premises. Authorities have registered a case and launched an investigation to assess whether safety regulations were violated. The three injured individuals are currently receiving treatment at a local medical facility.
Meanwhile, in neighbouring Tamil Nadu, a 77-year-old German national died after being attacked by a wild elephant in Coimbatore district. The victim, identified as Michael Jurcen, was travelling through Tiger Valley in the Valparai Range on Tuesday when the fatal encounter occurred.
Jurcen, who was riding a motorcycle, attempted to pass through the area despite warnings from several commuters who had halted their vehicles due to the presence of a rusher elephant. As he proceeded, the elephant charged and inflicted fatal injuries.
He was initially taken to WaterFalls Estate Hospital for emergency care and later transferred to Pollachi Government Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries despite efforts by medical personnel.
Both incidents have raised questions about tourist safety and wildlife management in ecologically sensitive areas.
