A man identified as Godwin Anuka has been killed by suspected kidnappers in the Ubulu-Uku area of Delta State after being abducted alongside his wife and two children. The attack, reportedly carried out by armed individuals believed to be Fulani herders, resulted in his murder in front of his family.
According to reports, the kidnappers had previously abducted two individuals on March 23 and taken them into the bush while demanding ransom. While hiding with their initial victims, the kidnappers encountered Anuka and his family working on their farm. They proceeded to abduct the entire family and demanded ransom for their release.
Authorities, including the Ubulu-Uku Central Vigilante team and the Nigerian Army, mobilized efforts to secure their freedom. Following negotiations, a ransom was paid, leading to the release of some of the abducted persons. However, Anuka was executed by the kidnappers in the presence of his wife and children.
Local government officials, including the chairman of Aniocha South LGA, Hon. Pastor Jude Chukwunwike, played a role in organizing the rescue operation alongside the Ubulu-Uku Palace. The security efforts resulted in the safe return of Anuka’s wife, children, and two other victims, but his killing has intensified concerns about the growing insecurity in the region.
Efforts to obtain an official statement from the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, were unsuccessful as calls and messages remained unanswered at the time of reporting.
The incident highlights the rising cases of kidnappings in Delta State, with reports linking several abductions to armed herders. The case follows a similar tragedy involving a female land agent, Esther Osaze, who was found dead days after being kidnapped. Concerns persist as some abducted victims remain in captivity due to their families’ inability to meet ransom demands.
