The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the killing of a legal practitioner and one other individual in a shocking daylight attack by unidentified armed men at Egbebelu village, Nanka, in Orumba North Local Government Area.
The incident occurred on Thursday, May 15, 2025, and was confirmed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga. The Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, immediately visited the crime scene alongside senior officers, including the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations and a team of detectives.
Ikenga revealed that one of the victims was a lawyer who had recently secured the bail of an accused person involved in a pending murder case at High Court II, Ekwulobia. He described the killings as “gruesome and deeply concerning.”
Preliminary investigations indicate the victims were returning from a court session when they were ambushed by gunmen riding a motorcycle. The assailants reportedly trailed the victims before double-crossing and opening fire on them.
One of the victims survived the attack and is currently receiving medical treatment at an undisclosed location. According to the police, the survivor has already been debriefed and has provided crucial intelligence now aiding the investigation and search for the killers.
The bodies of the deceased were recovered from the scene and have been identified by their respective families. A red Toyota Camry, believed to belong to one of the victims, was also recovered during the investigation.
The Commissioner of Police has ordered a full-scale investigation into the incident and has deployed tactical squads and intelligence operatives to track down the perpetrators. The command assured residents that every effort will be made to uncover the motive behind the attack and ensure justice is served.
This killing has added to growing fears about the worsening security situation in parts of Anambra State, particularly as it relates to targeted attacks involving legal practitioners and individuals linked to ongoing criminal cases.
The Nigerian Bar Association is yet to issue an official response, though rising tensions are evident within the legal community following the incident.
