Twenty people, including 12 minors, were injured Tuesday afternoon after a reported lightning strike hit the water at Dominion Beach Park on Lake Murray in Lexington County, South Carolina, according to fire officials.
Lexington County Fire Chief Kyle Minick confirmed that first responders evaluated all 20 individuals—eight adults and 12 children—for electrocution-related injuries following the incident, which occurred at approximately 4:43 p.m., according to preliminary reports from the National Weather Service.
Twelve of the victims were transported to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. All individuals are expected to recover, according to a statement from the County of Lexington.
Multiple agencies, including local fire departments, the sheriff’s office, and emergency medical services, responded swiftly to the scene. Officials credited strong inter-agency coordination with helping provide rapid assessment and care to the victims.

“Strong relationships with other local agencies played a critical role in ensuring a quick, coordinated response, allowing first responders to assess patients efficiently and provide the best possible care,” the county's statement read.
Dominion Beach Park, located at Dreher Dam, was temporarily closed for safety assessments but is scheduled to reopen on Wednesday.
The incident comes just days after a 15-year-old boy in Manhattan was hospitalized with second-degree burns after being struck by lightning during a fast-moving storm. He is also expected to make a full recovery.
These recent events highlight the growing concern over lightning-related injuries during peak summer months, when thunderstorms are more frequent and outdoor activity increases.
