The sole survivor of the devastating Air India crash that killed 241 people on Thursday defied the odds by walking away from the wreckage after being thrown from the aircraft moments before it exploded, according to medical officials.
Identified as Vishwashkumar Ramesh, a British national of Indian origin, the man was found near the debris and made his way to a nearby ambulance for help. Indian Home Minister Amit Shah confirmed he met with Ramesh at Ahmedabad’s Civil Hospital, where doctors are treating him for multiple injuries.
“He was disoriented with injuries all over his body, but he seems to be out of danger,” said Dr. Dhaval Gameti, one of the doctors overseeing Ramesh's treatment.
According to another medic, Ramesh recounted that the aircraft began to descend shortly after takeoff before suddenly splitting in two. He was ejected from the plane during the explosion and landed amidst the wreckage.

Video footage captured at the crash site appeared to show a bloodied Ramesh walking away from the burning remains of the plane, with emergency responders running toward him.
Ramesh reportedly held onto his boarding pass and later described the horrifying scene to local media: “When I got up, there were bodies all around me. I was scared. I stood up and ran.”
He was traveling to London with his brother and contacted relatives in Leicester shortly after the incident, according to his cousin, Ajay Valgi. “He only said that he’s fine, nothing else,” Valgi said. “We’re happy that he’s OK, but we’re still upset about the other brother.”
Ramesh's brother, Nayan Kumar Ramesh, revealed that the survivor had video-called their father moments after the crash. “He said, ‘Oh the plane’s crashed. I don’t know where my brother is. I don’t see any other passengers. I don’t know how I’m alive, how I exited the plane.’”
The Air India flight, a Boeing 787-8 en route to London, crashed into a residential building in Ahmedabad shortly after takeoff, killing nearly everyone on board. The incident marks one of the deadliest air disasters in India’s aviation history and is under active investigation by Indian and international aviation authorities.
