A Louisiana mother has been arrested on allegations that she heard her four-year-old son shoot himself and instead of checking on him, went back to sleep.

Arieana Scott, 22, reportedly kept a firearm stored in the bedroom closet of her Baton Rouge home, which her son accessed. On the morning of March 20 around 9:30 am, the boy shot himself with the unsecured, illegal, modified handgun, according to police reports.

Initially, officers stated that the mother claimed to have heard the firearm discharge from her bedroom and then found the boy with a gunshot wound. However, an affidavit for her arrest released Thursday indicates that she went back to sleep for a short time before waking up again to find the boy in a pool of blood. Scott mentioned that she called out for her son and, upon not receiving a response, fell back asleep.

At some point on the morning of March 20 around 9:30am, the boy shot himself with the unsecured, illegal, modified handgun at Scott's Baton Rouge home

It was later revealed that Scott attempted to claim she didn't know where the gun came from due to a prior felony criminal record, as reported by WBRZ. However, she eventually admitted to having the unsecured handgun in her bedroom closet, though she claimed ignorance as to how the four-year-old accessed it.

When police arrived and located the gun, they obtained a warrant to search Scott's home. They discovered a loaded .40 caliber Glock handgun equipped with a 'switch' that could convert the gun into an automatic weapon, and a shell casing was found in the boy's bedroom.

Additionally, police found a large bag of marijuana packaged in smaller baggies for distribution. Scott initially attempted to attribute it to her boyfriend's personal stash before acknowledging that it was not intended for individual use.

The suspect is currently in East Baton Rouge Parish Prison, facing multiple charges related to the shooting. Charges against Scott include improper supervision of a minor by a parent, possession of a firearm by a person convicted of certain felonies, and possession of a machine gun.

In light of the marijuana discovery at her home, she also faces charges of possession of a firearm in the presence of a controlled dangerous substance and possession with intent to distribute schedule one drugs. Her bond has been set at $65,000, and Child Services has been informed.

Scott's son sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head and remains in critical condition at a local hospital.
