A 33-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following two violent incidents on Friday, including a stabbing outside the Raza Jamia Masjid mosque in Accrington, Lancashire.

Lancashire Police were first called to the mosque on Lower Antley Street at approximately 14:30 BST after receiving reports of a stabbing. Officers arrived to find a man in his 40s with stab wounds to his back. He was transported to the hospital, where he remains in a serious but stable condition.

Later that afternoon, at around 17:20, police responded to further reports of disorder and fighting involving weapons on Steiner Street. Shortly after, a second man was discovered with serious stab injuries on nearby Craven Street. Authorities described this victim as being in “very poor” condition.

While it is not yet confirmed which of the two attacks the arrested man is specifically linked to, police believe the incidents are connected. A full investigation is underway.

In addition to the attempted murder arrest, three other individuals — a 36-year-old man and two women aged 33 and 36 — were taken into custody on suspicion of affray.

Lancashire Police stated, “While we are at the early stages of our investigation, these incidents are being treated as linked. An investigation is underway and enquiries are ongoing.”

A significant police presence remains in the area to support the investigation and reassure the community. Officers have emphasized that the violence appears to be an isolated conflict between individuals known to each other, with no wider threat to the public.

Authorities have urged anyone with relevant CCTV, dashcam footage, or other information to come forward to assist with the investigation.

The Raza Jamia Masjid mosque, which temporarily closed its doors as a precaution, issued a statement confirming its cooperation with law enforcement and support for the ongoing investigation.
