A man has died after falling from Preikestolen, a 1,981-foot (604-meter) cliff in southwestern Norway that gained fame from its appearance in the "Mission: Impossible – Fallout" film.

Preikestolen, or "Pulpit Rock," overlooks the Lysefjord and is one of Norway's most renowned hiking destinations, attracting over 300,000 visitors annually, according to Norway's official tourism website.

Nina Thommesen, a police attorney for the Sør-Vest police district, confirmed that the deceased man, in his 40s, was found on Monday. He was traveling alone and had his phone and ID with him, although his identity has not yet been officially released. Thommesen stated, “The police are investigating the case as a fall accident. We have no assumptions that anything criminal has happened.”

Two witnesses were questioned, including one who saw the incident and reported that the man slipped and fell.

Preikestolen, hailed as Norway's most iconic natural landmark, rose to international prominence when it was featured in the 2018 "Mission: Impossible – Fallout" film. The cliff doubled for a location in Kashmir during a climactic action sequence where the film’s main characters fall off the edge.

For the film's premiere, 2,000 fans hiked 4 kilometers (2.4 miles) to the cliff to watch the movie projected by lasers at night. Tom Cruise, the film's star, called it “the most impossible screening” of the film. The event was expected to boost local tourism and positively impact the area, according to the non-profit organization that manages Preikestolen, which works to preserve the site and ensure visitor safety.
