Shock and sadness gripped Amakpu Okuku community in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State on Friday morning after a man in his 50s, identified simply as Odomma, was found dead in an apparent suicide.
The father of four, who earned a living selling water in jerry cans and buckets, had reportedly battled financial hardship that left him unable to provide for his family. His body was discovered hanging in an uncompleted building near his home as residents set out for their daily activities.
Community members revealed that Odomma had previously threatened to take his own life, with his last warning coming about three months ago. He allegedly complained that his wife and children had stopped giving him food because he could no longer provide for them.
A villager identified as Ikenna said the deceased often voiced his frustrations. “He said if the situation continued, he would take his life to end the misery. We advised him to report the matter to the village head for settlement. Sadly, he chose this path. Just see how this man ended his life because of money. He could have sold his GP tank or generator to get food, but he decided to take his life. Now others will gather to eat and he won’t be part of it,” he said.
Eyewitnesses reported that residents rushed to the scene after news spread, with many crowding the uncompleted building to view the body, while some filmed the tragic discovery with their phones.
Known for his hard work and affordable water sales, priced from ₦100 upwards, Odomma had been described as visibly depressed in recent months.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer for Imo State, Henry Okoye, said he needed time to confirm details with the Divisional Police Officer of Owerri West but subsequent attempts to reach him were unsuccessful as his phone line was unreachable.
