Man Sets House on Fire in Abia State Over Suspected Infidelity, Killing Daughter and Injuring Other Family Members

Tragedy struck in Asa Umudim, Osisioma Ngwa Local Government Area of Abia State, as a man allegedly set his own house ablaze in a fit of rage, leading to the death of one of his daughters and leaving his wife and two other children critically injured.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, May 17, 2025. According to local reports, the man suspected his wife of infidelity, reportedly because her phone rang frequently and she received calls from men he believed to be her lovers.
Fueled by jealousy and suspicion, the man allegedly poured a flammable substance on his wife and children before setting the house on fire. Neighbors were jolted by the horrific scene and rushed to help, but one of the children tragically succumbed to the burns. The wife and two surviving children were rushed to a nearby hospital and are currently receiving intensive medical care.

The gruesome act triggered outrage in the community, with angry residents nearly lynching the suspect before police officers intervened and took him into custody.
The Abia State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Maureen Chinaka, confirmed the incident and said investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the case.
The deceased child’s body has been deposited in a mortuary as authorities continue to gather evidence.
The incident has plunged the Asa Umudim community into mourning, with residents condemning the act as inhumane and calling for justice to be served.
