Man who killed brother-in-law he thought was having affair with his wife jailed for 10 years
A father-of-three, Andrew 'Andy' Cash, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for fatally stabbing his brother-in-law, John Cash, in front of the victim's wife. While not convicted of murder, Cash was found guilty of manslaughter by Ms. Justice Eileen Creedon on Monday, following the incident on May 3rd, 2022, on Hebron Road, Kilkenny City.
Brigid, John Cash's eldest sister, expressed the family's devastation outside the court, stating dissatisfaction with the manslaughter verdict, emphasizing, "My brother got no justice this morning."
Ms. Justice Creedon remarked on the brutality of the attack, noting that Cash assaulted John in broad daylight on a busy street, then attempted to conceal the knife. Despite being found guilty of manslaughter, Cash continued to verbally abuse the victim as he lay injured.
The court learned that Cash, under the influence of alcohol and medication, snapped during an argument with his wife about past infidelity allegations involving John. The confrontation escalated when Cash encountered John and his wife later that day.
Evidence revealed Cash's premeditation as he armed himself with a knife and initiated the assault before any verbal exchange occurred. The impact of John's death was profound, leaving a significant void in the lives of his wife, children, and siblings.
Considering mitigating factors such as Cash's apology, lack of prior violent offenses, and his offer to plead guilty to manslaughter, Ms. Justice Creedon imposed an 11-year prison term, with the final year suspended pending engagement with probation services.
In a previous trial, Cash was acquitted of charges related to assaulting Elizabeth Cash and producing a knife during the altercation. CCTV footage depicted the escalating confrontation, with Cash repeatedly striking John before the fatal stabbing occurred.
John Cash's loved ones described him as a compassionate man, known for his kindness towards animals and the less fortunate. Outside the court, Brigid expressed the family's enduring pain, reminiscing about John's jovial nature and expressing hope for a reunion in heaven.
