Carolyn Sanger, a 49-year-old mother of four from Topsfield, Massachusetts, tragically fell to her death while hiking with her family at Purgatory Chasm State Reservation on Wednesday afternoon. The incident occurred around 2 p.m. as Sanger was walking with her children and other family members at the popular natural landmark.

According to Sutton Police, Sanger slipped and fell between 50 and 75 feet from a rugged section of the trail. Authorities believe the fall was accidental, caused by a simple loss of footing. Family friend Tim Paoli noted that the section where the incident occurred is known to be a more treacherous part of the trail. He added that there was no indication she was distracted, such as using a phone, at the time.

Several medical professionals who happened to be hiking nearby rushed to provide aid, but Sanger was pronounced dead at the scene. Three of her children reportedly witnessed the tragic fall.

Carolyn Sanger was described by loved ones as a radiant, selfless individual who was deeply devoted to her family. In a tribute shared by her family, she was remembered as a “bright light” who raised four respectful, responsible children and brought joy to all who knew her.

Sanger had worked as an oncology nurse before transitioning to a career in wellness, founding a business centered on health and healing. Her husband, Michael Sanger, spoke with deep emotion, describing her as “an amazing, amazing human” who “was the brightness and the light on a dark day for a lot of people.” The couple had met in college and were preparing to celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary in September.

The community continues to mourn the loss of a woman who was both an inspiration and a caregiver, with a legacy of love and compassion that touched many lives.
