A 26-year-old teacher at a high-performing Michigan charter school known for its emphasis on moral virtues has been charged with third-degree criminal sexual conduct for allegedly having an inappropriate relationship with a 16-year-old student.
Jocelyn Sanroman of Pontiac is accused of engaging in a sexual relationship with the teen in 2023 while employed at Oakside Prep Academy, a charter school in Waterford Township, approximately 30 miles northwest of Detroit. Authorities say Sanroman confessed the affair to a fellow teacher, who then alerted law enforcement.

Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald condemned the alleged actions, stating, “This defendant is accused of using her position of authority to exploit a minor victim. These allegations represent the ultimate breach of trust placed in educators by parents and the community.” McDonald, a former teacher herself, praised the colleague who reported the misconduct, saying it helped protect other students from potential harm.
Sanroman faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted. As of Monday, she had not yet been arraigned, but her mugshot was released by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.
Oakside Prep Academy, part of the National Heritage Academies network, promotes a “Moral Focus” curriculum designed to teach students ethical decision-making. The school’s website highlights its commitment to helping students “discern and appreciate the difference between right and wrong.”
