A 61-year-old Milwaukee woman has been charged in connection with a fatal shooting on the city’s north side that left her husband dead. The incident occurred on May 31 at an apartment complex near North 95th Street and Brown Deer Road.

Doris Winters is facing one count of first-degree reckless homicide with the use of a dangerous weapon, according to court documents filed in Milwaukee County.

Police were called to the scene shortly after 10 p.m. and were directed by witnesses to a woman walking away from the building. Officers observed the woman drop a handgun and quickly detained her. The woman was identified as Doris Winters.

The victim, 49-year-old Aerion Winters, was found at the scene with gunshot wounds to the back and chest. Despite life-saving efforts by first responders, he was pronounced dead.

According to the criminal complaint, a witness told investigators that Aerion Winters was the husband of Doris Winters and had recently been living at a separate residence. On the night of the shooting, the witness had driven Aerion to the apartment so he could retrieve some personal belongings.

Once inside, a verbal argument broke out between the couple. The witness said he attempted to intervene to calm the situation. During the confrontation, Doris Winters allegedly retrieved a handgun from a table in the living room, racked the slide, and declared that the weapon was loaded. She then reportedly fired at Aerion, striking him in the back.

The witness said the victim collapsed immediately. Doris Winters then allegedly told him, “Get him out of here before I shoot him again,” according to court documents.

After she was placed in a squad car, Winters made several unsolicited and incriminating remarks, captured on police cameras. She reportedly said, “He called me a [expletive] for the last time and I just shot him. I just shot him…” and, “So I just grabbed my gun and shot him because I’m just tired. I know I shouldn’t have shot him, but I’m just tired.”

At the police station, Doris Winters admitted to shooting Aerion during the argument, stating she fired when he turned away from her.

She remains in custody pending further court proceedings.
