The body of 21-year-old Navy Seaman Angelina Resendiz, who was reported missing in late May, has been discovered in a wooded area of Norfolk, Virginia, according to officials. The Norfolk Medical Examiner’s Office has confirmed the identity of the remains.

Resendiz was last seen on the night of May 29 at approximately 10 p.m. at her barracks in Miller Hall on Naval Station Norfolk. Her disappearance had been categorized as critical by authorities, citing concerns for her health and well-being. She was reported missing after she failed to report for duty and stopped all communication with family and friends.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) announced that a fellow Navy sailor has been placed in pretrial confinement in connection with Resendiz’s death. Charges under the Uniform Code of Military Justice are currently pending. NCIS stated that the investigation is ongoing and further details will not be released at this time to preserve the integrity of the case.

NCIS confirmed that it has been working in close collaboration with Navy leadership, the Norfolk Police Department, Virginia State Police, Virginia Search and Rescue, and multiple other federal and local law enforcement agencies in the search for Resendiz. Officials reiterated their commitment to uncovering the full truth and ensuring accountability and justice.

Resendiz’s mother, Esmeralda Castle, who resides in Texas, described her daughter as “loving” and “kind.” Resendiz was serving as a culinary specialist for the Navy. Castle said her daughter’s sudden disappearance was out of character, noting that she maintained daily communication with friends and family, including a Snapchat streak with her sister that had reached over 400 days.

“She just stopped existing Thursday. She’s spent no money, made no calls. She disappeared,” Castle said. “It’s very hard to tell people that she’s missing.”

Resendiz did not own or drive a vehicle, which heightened concern among loved ones and authorities when she failed to respond to calls and texts or appear for work.

NCIS has emphasized its continued dedication to a thorough investigation and has asked for privacy as the case progresses.
