A Mississippi woman wanted for allegedly killing her boyfriend and stealing his car surrendered to authorities after first alerting a local newspaper due to fear of how her arrest would unfold.

Aziza Young, 35, was taken into custody on Monday by the Adams County Sheriff's Office in Natchez, Mississippi, after contacting The Natchez Democrat to facilitate her surrender. The Jackson Police Department had issued an arrest warrant for Young in connection with the shooting death of 45-year-old Adrione Triggs and the theft of his vehicle.

According to Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade, the incident stemmed from a domestic dispute. During a press conference, Wade described the shooting as “calculated” based on eyewitness accounts and the physical evidence at the scene.

While Young told the newspaper she acted in self-defense, claiming Triggs had threatened her life, police dispute that version of events. Chief Wade emphasized, “Based on our investigation and witness testimony, she was not defending herself. Witnesses observed her attempting to move the body, which further undermines her claim.”

Wade had previously called on Young to contact law enforcement, saying, “If you’re defending yourself after taking someone’s life, call us. Don’t attempt to drag and move the body to fit some narrative you’re trying to create.”

The Adams County Sheriff’s Office received an anonymous tip that Young was in Natchez and willing to surrender. After confirming the warrant with Jackson Police, deputies and local officers located Young at a residence where she was waiting with members of the press. Sheriff Travis Patten confirmed that Young was arrested peacefully, stating, “She didn’t resist. She was visibly shaken and trembling. She just didn’t know how it was going to go.”

Young appeared in court on Wednesday for a bond hearing. During the hearing, a Jackson police officer detailed the events of the April 2024 killing. Witnesses reported that Young and Triggs arrived at a home arguing. At some point, Young allegedly returned to his vehicle, retrieved a firearm while wearing a blue surgical glove, and positioned herself out of view near the side of the house.

When Triggs exited the house, Young allegedly shot him in the back. A struggle for the gun followed, but she is accused of firing several more rounds before fleeing the scene in his car.

Young’s defense attorney maintained she acted in self-defense. However, the court heard testimony indicating premeditation and efforts to alter the crime scene, contradicting her claim.

Young’s bond was set at $1,025,000—$1 million for the murder charge and $25,000 for vehicle theft. She is expected to be extradited back to Jackson to face formal charges.
