A 16-year-old girl was killed in a drive-by shooting while brushing her friend’s hair during a sleepover at a Kansas City home on August 9.

The victim, identified as Traelynn Sibley, was preparing to start her junior year of high school when she was shot in the throat and collapsed in a bathroom moments later, according to the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office.

Authorities charged Bailey Lewis, 21, with second-degree murder, accessory armed criminal action, and accessory unlawful use of a weapon in connection with the shooting. Prosecutors said Lewis drove by the home to target another person inside with whom she had a “falling out” months earlier.

Court documents state that Sibley and her friend were “fixing each other’s hair at a vanity near the front door of the structure” when gunfire erupted. At the time, a toddler was in the home, along with two adult men playing video games in the living room and another young woman in a back bedroom.

Surveillance video captured a 2025 Hyundai Elantra registered to Lewis at both the scene of the shooting and another shooting that occurred approximately 15 minutes earlier. Investigators said the timing of both incidents aligned with her car’s travel route. Witnesses inside the home confirmed Lewis had ongoing disputes with some of the residents, including accusations of theft and a prior altercation at a gas station.

Lewis was arrested on August 28 and booked into the Jackson County Detention Center, where she is being held on a $400,000 bond.

Sibley’s mother described her daughter as a “beautiful, bright, sunny girl” with dreams of becoming a beautician. “She was a free spirit and almost always smiling and happy. She loved to dance, draw, and do nails,” her mother said. “We are absolutely broken by the loss of our sweet girl. I want to bring awareness to how these tragedies affect the community.”
