Ahmonique Miller, 28, of Nevada, has died following a cosmetic procedure in Miami. She traveled to the city on March 5 with her sister, Kiera Barnes, for surgery at Avana Plastic Surgery.
Both sisters underwent procedures on March 6 and were discharged to Keyla's Recovery House for post-surgical care. The next morning, Barnes awoke to find Miller unresponsive, in the same position as when they had fallen asleep.
Social media posts suggest Miller underwent a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL), a procedure that transfers fat from areas like the abdomen and thighs to the buttocks. While popular, with over 29,300 performed in the U.S. in 2023, BBLs carry significant risks, including fat embolism, where fat enters the bloodstream and can cause fatal blockages.
Barnes suspects her sister died from an adverse reaction to medication given at the recovery home. It is alleged that staff administered medication not prescribed to Miller, though the specific drug has not been disclosed. Strong painkillers are typically prescribed after such procedures.

The family is awaiting a toxicology report to determine the cause of death. Their attorney, Frantz McLawrence, stated: “Recovering from post-operation should not equal a death sentence. Ahmonique Miller should be alive with her one-year-old daughter, running her business. Instead, she is dead due to being provided un-prescribed medication while at the recovery house.” He also expressed frustration with the Miami Police Department, citing limited communication regarding the investigation.
Miller was an entrepreneur who operated two small businesses in Las Vegas and had aspirations as a music artist. Before her passing, she and her sister shared their Miami trip online with a post tagged “BBL round 2.”
Her mother, Wakeelah Miller, mourned her loss on social media, writing: “She was my firstborn, my ladybug, my whole life. Please allow me time to process this loss and begin to heal.” A vigil and balloon release were held in her honor.
Avana Plastic Surgery declined to comment, citing respect for the family's privacy. The recovery house's attorney, Bob Pardo, also withheld comments but extended condolences to the family.
