The Anambra State Government, through the Ministry of Women and Social Welfare, caught a 38-year-old woman named Chinyere Chukwu for trying to sell her two sons.
Chukwu, from Okija in the Ihiala Local Government Area, worked with her 17-year-old daughter, Joy, to sell the boys because of the tough economic times in the country.
During questioning, Chukwu, who has 11 kids, explained that she couldn't take care of all of them, so she decided to sell two. The state Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, and security operatives posed as buyers, leading to the suspects' arrest on Tuesday.
Chukwu admitted, "I have 11 kids and when I could not cater to them, I decided to sell two of them. Since they are boys, the prices were kept at N1 million each, but after serious bargaining by the commissioner, who posed as the buyer, we decided to sell them at N1.8 million instead of the initial N2 million."
She added that she got interested in the business after her neighbor successfully sold one of her kids. Chukwu had two kids with her husband, and after his death, she struggled to provide adequate care and support for the remaining nine children.
Her 17-year-old daughter explained that the plan was to use the money from the sale for her tertiary education.
