A mother tragically fell 290ft to her death in front of her son while attempting to take a selfie on a tower just minutes after completing a successful bungee-style rope jump on her 45th birthday.
Elizaveta “Liza” Gushchina, a mother of two and extreme sports enthusiast, had celebrated her birthday with a daring rope jump from an abandoned boiler tower in Pavlovsk, near St. Petersburg, Russia. Her son, 23-year-old Nikita, witnessed the devastating fall.

Witnesses said that after completing her adrenaline-filled jump and landing safely, Gushchina climbed back up the tower without safety ropes to capture a selfie as a keepsake. She slipped and fell 290ft to her death.
Moments before the tragedy, Gushchina had shared footage of her leap, smiling and shouting “Let’s go!” as she jumped. She screamed with joy during the descent and appeared uninjured after the stunt.

The rope-jumping facility, operated by company 23block, described her as an experienced jumper and valued member of their sports team. “In tragic circumstances, experienced jumper and mother-of-two children Liza has passed away. Now the whole team is mourning her loss. This is a very big tragedy for us,” the company said in a statement.
The extreme sports tower is advertised as a venue for people who “cannot imagine their life without adrenaline, rope jumping, flights, active recreation, and free fall.”
Russia’s state prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation into the incident to determine whether the operators complied with safety regulations when providing their services.
