Mother Survives Horrific Assault by Ex-Husband in Sinister Plot to Win Her Back
A mother of two, who was beaten, bound, raped, and nearly choked to death by a masked intruder, revealed how she came to the horrifying realization that it was her ex-husband, turned stalker, behind the sinister attack.
On New Year's Day 2021, Morgan Metzer woke up in her Canton, Georgia home to find a masked man standing in her bedroom doorway, using a voice distortion tool that made him sound "like something out of Batman," she told The Sun.
Her twins were away with family, leaving her alone in the house when the nightmare began. "I screamed so loud, it's a scream that I don't think I can ever do again. It was so painful," she recalled. “Soon enough, he was on top of me.”
The masked man brutally beat her with the butt of a pistol, restrained her with zip ties, and sexually assaulted her. About half an hour into the attack, he began to strangle her. “At that point, I knew I was going to die,” she said.
The attacker, who wore a mask resembling Batman's, suddenly stopped and dragged her out onto her deck. As he fled, he made a chilling comment about how she was going to miss her kids and husband, which immediately made her suspicious. "That's when I went, 'Wow, it's him,'" she said. "Why would somebody randomly say you’re going to miss your husband?”
Despite his hidden identity and the trauma, Metzer suspected from the start that her attacker was her ex-husband, Rodney Metzer. Bound, nearly naked, and with a pillowcase over her head in the winter air, she tried to stay awake, fearing she might die from her injuries. Around 1:40 a.m., Rodney arrived at the house, claiming a stranger had told him about the break-in.
Though he appeared devastated, Morgan wasn’t convinced. As they waited for police, she began accusing him of the attack, which he adamantly denied. The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office arrived around 2 a.m. and quickly grew suspicious of Rodney’s swift arrival and behavior.
Investigators found a handgun in Rodney’s vehicle and zip ties in his apartment matching those used to bind Morgan. Surveillance video later showed Rodney buying zip ties at a Lowe's, and searches on his devices included phrases like "how long before you starve to death" and "how long it takes to choke someone until they’re unconscious."
Rodney was arrested within hours of the attack. He had been gaslighting Morgan for years, blaming her for various incidents and making her doubt herself. They divorced in December 2020 but remained friends for their children’s sake. Just days before the attack, Rodney faked a cancer diagnosis to gain sympathy from his ex-wife.
Morgan and Rodney had even driven to Florida together to drop their twins off with family for Christmas, attempting to show a united front. After returning, Rodney fabricated documents to support his false cancer diagnosis. "It was his last straw to try and get me back," Morgan said.
When his schemes failed, Rodney developed a convoluted plan to attack Morgan and then rescue her to win her back. Fortunately, investigators saw through his deception and arrested him.
Rodney pleaded guilty on August 4, 2021, to 14 charges, including kidnapping, home invasion, and sexual battery. As part of a plea deal, he was sentenced to 70 years, with 25 years to be served in prison and the remainder on probation.
