A U.S. Navy veteran and father of four was shot and killed during a dramatic shootout with police in El Paso, Texas, after allegedly provoking officers to open fire. The fatal encounter, captured in newly released body camera footage, unfolded in broad daylight on June 1 following a family violence call.

The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Salvador Valdiviezo, was encountered by two El Paso Police Department officers in the driveway of a residential home. According to authorities, Valdiviezo was armed and refused to comply with orders to surrender. As a female officer instructed him to raise his hands, Valdiviezo opened fire.

Bodycam footage shows the startled officer returning fire, supported by her male partner. Both officers took cover behind a parked truck as Valdiviezo maneuvered into the street and continued shooting.

During the exchange, the female officer reloaded her weapon behind the truck when Valdiviezo re-emerged and fired at her again. She and her partner responded with a volley of shots. Valdiviezo was struck multiple times, including in the chest and leg, and collapsed on the street.

As the confrontation ended, the female officer realized she had been hit in the leg. Footage shows her applying a Velcro tourniquet to stop the bleeding while the other officer radioed for medical assistance, stating, “Subject down. I got an officer who’s shot.”

Valdiviezo was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Approximately two dozen rounds were exchanged during the tense 40-second gunfight.

Valdiviezo, a registered nurse, was honorably discharged from the Navy, according to his obituary. It is unclear when he served and why he was relieved from duty

The El Paso Police Department has launched an internal investigation into the incident, and the Texas Rangers are also reviewing the shooting, as is standard protocol.
