New Jersey Congressman Donald Payne dead at age 65

Rep. Donald Payne, D-N.J., was reportedly in a coma since suffering a heart attack on April 6

New Jersey Democratic Representative Donald Payne Jr. passed away at 65 years old.


Payne experienced a heart attack on April 6 and had been in a coma on a ventilator at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, as reported by the New Jersey Globe. He had faced health challenges in the past, including diabetes and liver issues.


Previously, his office had reported that Payne was recovering after his heart attack earlier in April.

A spokesperson for his office stated on April 17, 'Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. experienced a cardiac episode due to complications from his diabetes last week.'


The spokesperson added that Payne was 'in stable condition at a local hospital and continues to receive medical care.'


New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy expressed his sorrow, saying, 'My wife and I are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of our friend and a strong advocate for the people of New Jersey, Congressman Donald Payne, Jr.'

He added, 'Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this challenging time.'
