A New Jersey elementary school teacher has been arrested and charged with sexually abusing a former student after the victim’s father discovered a striking resemblance between his son and the teacher’s young child in a Facebook photo.
Laura Caron, 34, of Cape May Court House, was indicted last week by a Cape May County grand jury on two counts of aggravated sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child. Authorities allege the abuse began in 2016 when the victim was just 11 years old and continued for four years.

The investigation was launched after the victim’s father posted a photo of Caron’s five-year-old daughter on Facebook, questioning the child’s paternity. The post, which quickly gained attention, prompted law enforcement to open a case.
Prosecutors say Caron, a fifth-grade teacher in the Middle Township School District, had a years-long sexual relationship with the boy, who had previously been her student. The victim and his siblings had intermittently stayed at Caron’s home due to instability in their biological family before moving in permanently by 2016.

Court documents reveal that Caron allegedly groomed the boy, engaging in a sexual relationship that lasted until 2020. In 2019, she gave birth to a daughter—fathered, prosecutors claim, by the then-13-year-old victim.
Other children in the home reportedly noticed red flags, including the victim sleeping in Caron’s bed and showering with her. One sibling allegedly witnessed a sexual encounter, while another possessed a screenshot of a conversation where the victim admitted to fathering Caron’s child but begged her to keep it secret.

Caron was arrested in January 2025 but released pending trial. Her defense attorney, John Tumelty, argued that no DNA test had yet confirmed paternity, though prosecutors confirmed a warrant for testing had been issued.
Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey Sutherland called the allegations "deeply disturbing," emphasizing the breach of trust involved. If convicted, Caron faces up to 20 years in prison for first-degree aggravated sexual assault, with additional penalties for second-degree charges.

The Middle Township School District suspended Caron without pay following her arrest. Her arraignment is scheduled for July 16 in Cape May County Superior Court.
