New Jersey Father Beaten to Death by Longtime Friend and Son After Confronting Them Over Daughter’s Assault

Louis “Gus” Serbeck, a 54-year-old New Jersey father and skilled carpenter, was beaten to death on Easter Sunday after confronting a longtime friend and his son over the alleged assault of his 19-year-old daughter, Brooke Serbeck. The fatal confrontation occurred at the Vineland-area residence of Eric Hannah, 55, and his 17-year-old son, Jacob.
According to a criminal complaint filed in Cumberland County, Serbeck and his daughter went to the Hannah residence after Brooke claimed she had sustained two black eyes during an overnight stay. The injuries, she alleged, were the result of a beating by Jacob. Serbeck, who had been friends with Hannah since high school, intended to speak with him peacefully about the incident. However, upon arrival, Jacob allegedly punched Serbeck in the face and began destroying his pickup truck with a metal baseball bat. When Serbeck attempted to intervene, Jacob reportedly turned the bat on him and began striking him repeatedly.
Court documents reveal that during the attack, Eric Hannah joined in, wielding a large metal flashlight and delivering several blows to Serbeck’s head. As Brooke watched in horror, she was also reportedly struck in the head by Jacob. She managed to separate her father from the attackers and helped him back to his truck. Despite her efforts, Hannah and his son allegedly advanced again — this time with a hammer — and Serbeck ultimately collapsed. Emergency services arrived at the scene but were unable to save him; he was declared dead en route to the hospital.
The Hannah family has presented a conflicting account of the events. Fourteen-year-old Alana Hannah stated that Brooke’s injuries stemmed from an altercation that began around 3 a.m. Saturday when Brooke, allegedly intoxicated, became physically aggressive after being asked to leave the house. Alana claimed she punched Brooke only after her hair was pulled and that the black eyes were the result of that scuffle.
According to the Hannahs, Brooke returned with her father the following day and initiated a physical confrontation. They alleged that Serbeck threw the first punch at Jacob, leading to a chaotic fight in which Jacob grabbed a bat for self-defense, and Serbeck armed himself with a pipe. Alana insisted that no one struck Serbeck with a bat or flashlight and that they believed he suffered a heart attack when he collapsed. She claimed to have filmed parts of the altercation and submitted the footage to police, which prosecutors have since used as part of their criminal case.
Christopher Serbeck, Gus’s younger brother, rejected the Hannahs' version of events and said the attack did not add up. He emphasized the close friendship between Gus and Eric, who frequently worked on boats and dirt bikes together, and said his brother was strong, capable, and not one to start a fight unnecessarily. “To have someone you’ve known your whole life kill you, it just don’t add up,” he said. “If somebody came out of the door in a threatening manner, they never would have made it past his left hand.”
Family and friends described Serbeck as a fiercely loyal father and grandfather, known for his “mythic” personality and strong protective nature. “His kids were everything to him,” said Christopher. “He wasn’t looking for a fight. He just wanted to know what happened to his daughter.” Serbeck is survived by two daughters and two grandsons, whom he doted on endlessly. His obituary reflected his pride in his family, noting, “Gus’ daughters and grandsons were his pride and joy. Bigger than the Legend that is Gus; they are the cornerstone of his legacy.”
Eric Hannah has been charged with homicide and is being held at Cumberland County Jail. His 17-year-old son was taken to a juvenile detention facility as prosecutors determine whether to try him as an adult.
