A New Zealand dairy farmer is standing trial on 38 charges of sexual assault, including multiple counts of rape, bestiality involving cows, and indecent acts with calves. The man, from the country’s far north, is accused of sexually abusing his wife and underage stepdaughter over a decade while also engaging in disturbing acts with his cattle.

Court proceedings revealed that the farmer allegedly raped his stepdaughter nearly 90 times, with his wife testifying that the girl remained silent out of love for her stepfather. The wife reportedly feared her daughter could become pregnant, expressing relief when the man underwent a vasectomy. Crown prosecutor Geraldine Kelly stated, “Getting pregnant had been a concern for her before she was 12.”

The man’s alleged depravity extended to his livestock. During calving season, he reportedly forced cows and calves to perform sexual acts on him before demanding his wife engage in intercourse immediately afterward. Kelly told the court, “[The wife] told him she found it repulsive, but he would just do it.” The farmer is also accused of raping his wife nearly 300 times, allegedly claiming that “no means yes” and that women eventually enjoy sex against their will.

Defense lawyer Matthew Ridgley dismissed the bestiality allegations as “nonsense” and argued that any sexual contact with the stepdaughter was consensual, claiming she was over 16 at the time. He also maintained that all interactions with his wife were consensual.

The trial, expected to last three weeks, includes 15 counts of rape, one charge of bestiality involving cows, and one charge of performing indecent acts on calves. The case has shocked the rural community, highlighting extreme sexual violence and animal abuse allegations.
