Nigerian actress, content creator, and body positivity advocate Monalisa Stephen has died in Lagos after a battle with low blood sugar and internal bleeding. The 32-year-old passed away on Tuesday, leaving fans and the entertainment industry in shock and mourning.
Her death was confirmed by her immediate younger sister and publicly shared on Wednesday. Monalisa, whose real name was Monalisa Ayobami Stephen and who was also known by the nickname “Gabacci,” was widely recognized for her advocacy for plus-size women and her vocal support for self-love and body confidence.
During her career, Stephen appeared in popular Nollywood productions including Mami Wata (2023) and Breaded Life (2021), as well as a wide array of comedy skits and online content. Her vibrant presence on social media made her a beloved figure and influential brand ambassador.

Known for her candor and activism, Monalisa consistently used her platform to speak out against body shaming and discrimination. Earlier in the year, she expressed frustration over what she described as widespread bias against plus-size actresses in Nollywood. In one of her last interviews, she condemned the industry's preference for appearance over talent.
“They’re biased against plus-size actresses, and it’s becoming worse for a generation with a fast mind. I don’t know who started the idea of putting one’s look over one’s talent. That is so ridiculous. They need to do better—all sizes should be included,” she said. “Not even from a place where my forefathers and mothers were built like this. I can’t do anything about it; it’s in the genes.”
Monalisa’s sudden death has prompted an outpouring of grief and tributes across social media from fans, fellow entertainers, and advocates of inclusivity and diversity. Many have remembered her as a fearless voice for marginalized women and a passionate force for change in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
As the industry mourns her passing, tributes continue to highlight the legacy she leaves behind—a legacy of body confidence, authenticity, and strength.
